abstract The object of the invention to produce 2,3-diphosphonosuccinic acid or its salts both by a rational process and to avoid the use of the costly Acetylendicarbonsaeuredimethylester as starting material is inventively by hydrolysis or by transesterification and subsequent hydrolysis of easily accessible and cost-effectively producible 3, 4-di- (dialkylphosphono) -tetrahydrofuran-2,5-diones achieved. Thus, the process according to the invention is economically advantageous over known processes with the same or better product yields and qualities. Due to their ability, 2,3-diphosphonosuccinic acid and its salts are used for complex formation with various cations in the detergent, cement and photographic industries as well as in human and veterinary medicine.
