abstract | The invention relates to a process for the preparation of sulfonium or sulfoxonium salts of N-phosphonomethylglycine and is characterized by (1) reacting N-phosphonomethylglycine, a compound of the formula with a compound selected from the group consisting of compounds of formula (a) wherein R1, R2 and R3 are the same or different and are alkyl groups having 1 to 4 carbon atoms or aromatic alkyl groups, X is chlorine, bromine or iodine and Z is an electron pair or oxygen, or (b) wherein R1, R2 and R3 are the same or different and alkyl groups having 1 to 4 carbon atoms and have the same meaning as mentioned under (a), R4 represents an alkyl group having 1 to 12 carbon atoms, aromatic groups or aromatic alkyl groups, chlorine, bromine or iodine and Y is nitrogen or phosphorus, wherein the reaction is carried out in the presence of a Trialkylamis of formula (R) 3N, wherein R is the same or different and an alkyl group having 4 to 13 carbon and reacting further in the presence of water and a polar, water immiscible organic solvent, the reaction being conducted at a temperature and for a sufficient period of time to complete the reaction, and (2) isolating the catalyst End product by phase separation. |
