abstract The invention relates to a process for the preparation of imidazo (4,5-c) pyridin-ones for use as medicaments. The aim of the invention is the provision of new compounds with valuable pharmacological properties, in particular with effect on the contractility of the heart muscle. According to the invention, new imidazo (4,5-c) pyridinones of the general formula (I) are prepared in which one of the radicals A or B is a methine group and the other of the radicals A or B is a carbonyl radical, R 1 is an alkylmercapto, alkylsulfinyl or alkylsulfonyl group and R 2 represent an alkoxy group, their tautomers and their acid addition salts, in particular their physiologically acceptable acid addition salts with inorganic or organic acids.
