The invention relates to a process for the preparation of a catalyst system for olefin polymerization from an organometallic compound of a metal of I.-IV. Main group or II. Subgroup of the periodic table as cocatalyst and a solid catalyst component of a magnesium-containing carrier and a transition metal compound, which is obtained by vanadium tetrachloride (VCL4) or vanadyl chloride (VOCl3) with a carrier of the composition MgmClnCpHq, where m0,80-0, 95, n1.60-1.90, p0.60-1.60, q1.40-3.40 and the solid catalyst component contains 3.80-11.40 wt% of VCL4 or VOCl3. The reaction of the vanadium compound with the carrier is carried out in the presence of carbon tetrachloride at temperatures between 293 K and 373 K. The novel catalyst system is characterized by a high activity. |
