abstract In the case of a liquid crystal display after the bistability effect, the distance between the carrier plates is less than 10 mm and the total twist of the liquid crystal is between 180 and 360, preferably about 270. Randomly distributed spacers are provided over the entire viewing area of the display. As a result of these measures, the range of the bistable behavior is narrowed such that the display with operating voltages outside this range can be controlled by the usual multiplexing method. It achieves a high degree of multiplexing with short switching times and excellent contrast. The viewing angle range is very large and independent of the direction of illumination.
