abstract An electrolytic cell having a septum separating an anode and cathode space and having an electrode assembly having a reticulated foam net structure arranged in physical contact with the septum. The power supply is connected to such an electrode assembly by intermetallic bonding. The electrolyte is circulated through a reticulated electrode by means of circulating means. The electrode assembly, in particular cathode assembly, can be produced in an electrolytic cell by making a foam cut to a suitable shape conductive and then galvanically coating it with a suitable metal coating. The foam carrier material can be removed by thermal treatment. The electrodes according to the invention require lower operating voltages than known electrodes and thus allow savings in electrical energy.
