abstract The invention relates to a process for the preparation of tablets from acidic active ingredient powders for use as medicaments. The aim of the invention is to provide an improved tablet form which does not stick to the oesophagus when administered orally and damages it. According to the invention, the tablet composition containing as active ingredient, for example, a tetracycline antibiotic, such as doxycycline hydrochloride, during the granulation or tabletting phase, a carbonate which liberates carbon dioxide in the mouth or throat when moistening the tablet, or the tablets are coated with such a carbonate layer containing umhuellt. The carbonate used is an alkali metal carbonate or bicarbonate, preferably sodium carbonate. In particular, 0.01 to 3.0 equivalents of carbonate per equivalent of active ingredient are used.
