The present invention relates to the isolation of a specific nucleotide sequence containing the genetic code for a specific protein, the synthesis of DNA having that specific nucleotide sequence and the transfer of this DNA into a host microorganism in which replication of the DNA occurs. In particular, the invention relates to the isolation of insulin gene and growth hormone genes, their purification, transfer and replication in a microbial host and their subsequent characterization. The invention provides new products. These include a plasmid into which a specific nucleotide sequence derived from a higher organism is inserted, and a new microorganism which, as part of its genetic makeup, contains a specific nucleotide sequence from a higher organism. |
