abstract | The invention relates to a process for the preparation of pregna-1,4-diene-3,2β-dione, which can serve as a starting material for the synthesis of cortocoids. The object of the invention is "the economical conversion of bis-nor-chola-1, 4" dien-3-one-22-acid, which is accessible from various sterols by microbial side chain degradation, to said title compound -chola. ™, 4-dien-3-one-22-acid is converted into its acid halide, this with an excess of an ionic azide to the 20-AzidocarbcnyIaminc-pregna-l, 4-dian-3-one, this is converted into the 20-imino-pregna-diene-3-one by treatment with an aqueous ionic hydroxide, from which the N, N-dihalogen derivative is obtained by means of a positive halogen-containing compound, this is mixed with a strong base to 20 "(N).
