The process starts from the bis-nor-chola-1,4-dien3-one 22 acidnmade with lead tetraacetate and iodine in boilingnCarbon tetrachloride irradiated to 20-iodo-pregna-1,4-diene3-ηηnis implemented. This provides when heated with lithium carbonatenand lithium bromide in dimethylformamide with elimination of hydrogen iodidenthe pregna-1,4,17 (20) -trien-3-one, which is at room temperaturenin tert-butanol with N-methylmorpholine-N-oxide peroxide in the presence ofncatalytic amounts of osmium tetroxide and pyridinen17a-hydroxy-pregna-1,4-diene-3,20-dione.
