abstract The present invention relates to a catalyst for ethylene polymerization. The present invention also relates to a process for preparing an ethylene polymerization catalyst comprising reacting a magnesium powder with an alkyl halide of formula RX in the presence of an ethereal solvent to form a magnesium compound having the structure represented by formula (RMgX) .sub.pn (MgX.sub.2.n. wherein R is an alkyl group of 3 to 12 carbon atoms, X is a halogen and the molar ratio of q / p is in the range of greater than 0 to 1, by impregnating the magnesium compound onto the silicate carrier, from reacting the compound-saturated silicate of magnesium with an alkyl halide of formula R 1, X 1, X 1, with a titanium and alkyl aluminum component to form a major catalyst component, and to combine a major catalyst component with a cocatalyst to form the resulting ethylene polymerization catalyst. The present invention also relates to the use of a catalyst in ethylene polymerization.
