H.sub.32-44 .nNsub.6-8.n.] Subnn where n = 6 to 8, with a molecular weight (5. + -. 1). with an amount of -OH groups of 4.02 to 4.05% by weight, with an amount of = 0 groups of 1.04 to 1.06% by weight, with an individual element content in% by weight: C 49.44 to 49.52 ; H 5.10 to 5.73, N 1.15 to 1.24; 41.20 to 42.10; with unpaired electron concentration of 1018 to 1022 spin / g and bright spectral lines in regions 3433, 1620, 1400 and 1200 to 1100 cm.sup.-1.n. The method of producing the plant melanin fraction consists in the fact that it contains the native polymer and / or building blocks such as catechins and leucocantoocyanidines are treated with 0.05 to 0.3 M aqueous alkali metal hydroxide at 15 to 75 degC, the pH of the extract is adjusted to 1-2 with the addition of inorganic chlorine-based acid wherein the deposited sediment is cleaned and subsequently dried at 100-110 degC.
