abstract A process for producing a cellulosic composite article comprising the step of (a) combining a phenolic resin with a cellulosic material to form a mixture, step (b) forming a matrix from the mixture obtained in step (a) and step (c) compacting the matrix to cause heat, steam and pressure a press apparatus to form a cellulosic composite article, further comprising the step of (d) introducing an aqueous aluminum chloride solution into the mixture prior to step (c), wherein the aluminum chloride solution provides 0.2 to 0.6 wt. of aluminum chloride based on the total weight of the mixture of step (a). Other alternatives are possible, for example by introducing an unspecified catalytic agent into the mixture prior to step (c) of compacting the matrix, in order to achieve acid hydrolysis of the polymer molecules present in the cellulosic material. Preferably, the catalyst is aluminum chloride.
