abstract The cell membrane nutrition of red blood cells and platelet concentrate is improved by the addition of 1 to 10 mM L-carnitine and its derivative. This improvement will allow prolongation of the life of canned red blood cells and platelet concentrate beyond normal time. In addition, the materials thus treated exhibit an increase in the half-life of the transfusion lifetime. The improved preservation of the membrane achieved in this way allows the canning of blood products to be irradiated by sufficiently sterilizing them and destroying the leukocytes therein. The addition of L-carnitine and its derivative also suppresses the growth of bacteria in whole blood and blood fractions and reduces glycolysis.
