abstract | A process for the preparation of a benzyl cyanide optionally substituted on the benzene ring with one to three identical or different substituents selected from the group consisting of halogen atoms, hydroxy, C 1 -C 5 alkyl, C 1 -C 5 alkoxy, trihalomethyl and N, N-dialkylamino a group having from 1 to 5 carbon atoms in each alkyl radical, wherein the benzyl halide optionally substituted on the benzene ring as well as the benzyl cyanide to be prepared is reacted with an alkali metal cyanide, in particular sodium cyanide, in an aliphatic alcohol containing 1-3 carbon atoms atoms, in particular methanol, in the absence of water, optionally adding an alkali metal iodide, in particular sodium iodide, as a catalyst. |
