abstract | The present invention relates to a nitrile compound of formula 1 and to a process for the preparation of a quinoline derivative 3 wherein the aldehyde compound of formula 2 is reacted with 0.5 to 5 moles of diethyl cyanomethylphosphonate per mole of aldehyde compound in a solvent selected from the group consisting of aromatic hydrocarbons, ether solvents and halogenated solvents, in the presence of a base at a temperature ranging from -20 to 80 degC to form a nitrile compound of formula 1, and then reducing the nitrile compound of formula 1 in an aromatic hydrocarbon solvent at a temperature ranging from -50 to 50 degC. with 0.5 to 5 moles of diisobutylaluminum hydride. |
