There is described a method for identifying pigs resistant to E. coli gut colonization capable of binding ECF18R in a pig, an isolated DNA molecule coding for a gene for .alpha. (1,2) fucosyltransferase 1 in pigs, a polypeptide encoded by such a DNA molecule, a fragment of such isolated DNA molecules and a vector containing such a DNA molecule, as well as cells transformed with the vector. Thus, non-invasive highly sensitive and specific methods and means for distinguishing disease-susceptible pigs caused by infection of F18 E. coli from resistant pigs are achieved. |
