abstract | There is disclosed a hemoglobin reagent composition in a blood sample that comprises an aqueous admixture of at least one surfactant in an amount effective to hemolysis of red blood cells in said sample and micelle formation; a soluble inorganic cyanide salt in an amount effective to bind to the heme molecules resulting from said blood cell hemolysis; and a pH buffer capable of maintaining the pH of said mixture at 10.0 to 11.2; wherein said admixture reagent composition with said blood sample does not cause interference caused by white blood cell cells in automatic hemoglobin assays. A method for determining hemoglobin in a whole blood sample comprises mixing an aliquot of said blood sample with a reagent composition into a reaction mixture and analyzing the reaction mixture on an automated hematology analyzer to determine hemoglobin using the reagent composition above. |
