A process for the preparation of arylamides of heteroaromatic carboxylic acids of formula I wherein each A.sup.n.n. nitrogen or CR.sup.n.n. (n = 1-5), with the proviso that at least one ring member is nitrogen and that two nitrogen atoms are not immediately linked together; R.sup.1.n. to R5, if present, are independently hydrogen, C1-4 alkyl, or aryl, wherein one of R.sup.1 is. to R.sup.5.n. is a group of the formula -OR wherein R is an optionally substituted aromatic or heteroaromatic radical; R.sup.6.n. is hydrogen or C 1-7 alkyl; means an optionally substituted aromatic or heteroaromatic radical. Amides are obtained from the corresponding heteroaromatic halogen compounds, the corresponding aromatic amines and carbon monoxide in the presence of palladium-diphosphine complex. The compounds of this class are important herbicides |
