abstract | The process for the preparation of the 2H-1-benzopyranes of the formula I is that in the first step the aliphatic aldehyde of the formula II is converted with an aliphatic alcohol of the formula R 4 with 4 OH or HOR with 4 OH where R .sup.4.n. is an alkyl group or (C.sub.1.n.-C.sub.4) alkanediyl group, in the presence of a dehydrating compound of formula HC (OR.sup.5.n.) Sub.3.n, where R.sup.5.n. is an alkyl group, and an alumina / silica catalyst, to an aliphatic acetal of formula III, wherein R 4 is 4. is an alkyl group, or both, R 4, R 4, R 4, R 4, R 4, R 4, R 4, R 4, R 4, R 4, R 4, R 6 or R 6. forming a cyclic (C.sub.2.times.sub.4) alkandiyl group, which is then condensed in a second step with a phenol of formula IV in the presence of a base in an inert organic solvent to give the final product of formula I. |
