abstract A water-swellable, water-insoluble polymer containing units derived from a diallyl monomer of a quaternary ammonium salt, wherein the monomer has formula I wherein R.sup.1 is n. and R.sup.2 may be the same or different, meaning organic radical which in some cases does not affect the properties of the polymer and X is a suitable anion crosslinked by a suitable polyfunctional vinyl compound, the polymer is made by cationic polymerization in water using a free radical catalyst. The following describes the production of water-swellable, water-insoluble polymer, which involves the polymerization of diallyl monomer quaternary ammonium salts.
