abstract The hydroxy-substituted azetidinones of the general formula I, in which the substituents have specific meanings and their pharmaceutically acceptable salts. In the process of preparing a subgroup of formula IA, a) the lactone of formula II, with a strong bz, b) reaction of the product of step a) is reacted with an imine of formula III, c ) to react the acid, d) chromium, if present, the hydroxy substituents on R @ a and on the carbon to which R @ 5 is substituted are removed. and a hydroxy group or an amino group on which any Ar. and Ar.sup.3.n. and the hydroxyl-substituted azetidinones are converted to their salts. The pharmaceutical composition for preventing or preventing atherosclerosis or low plasma cholesterol levels as an active ingredient contains a large amount of hydroxy-substituted azetidinone in association with a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier.
