abstract A process for the preparation of triazine derivatives of general formula III, in which R.sub.1.n. is hydrogen or an optionally substituted hydrocarbon group, R.sub.2.n. is hydrogen or an optionally substituted hydrocarbon group, or R.sub.1.n. and R.sub.2.n. together they form a carbocyclic ring, R.sub.3.n. is hydrogen or C 1-6 1-6 -alkyl, and Z is -N = CH- or -NH-CH.sub.2.n.-, in which the aminotriazinone of formula I is reacted with an aldehyde of formula IV, and optionally converting the resulting pyridylmethyleneaminotriazinone by selective reduction to pyridylmethylaminotriazinone, wherein the aminotriazinone of formula I is prepared by solvolysis of a compound of formula II in which R.sub.1.n., R.sub.2.n. and R.sub.3.n. have the meanings given above, and R.sub.4.n. is hydrogen, an optionally substituted hydrocarbon group or an optionally substituted pyridyl, in the presence of hydrogen chloride gas in an alcoholic medium.
