titleOfInvention | A method for producing high molecular weight water soluble or water swellable polymers |
abstract | From the hydrophilic monomers, a 20-60% aqueous solution is prepared which is emulsified into an oil and water immiscible phase, typically an aliphatic or cycloaliphatic hydrocarbon. In 100 wt. parts of the oil phase emulsify 30 to 100 wt. parts of an aqueous monomer solution. The emulsion is stabilized with a surfactant having an HLB of less than 8, in an amount of 0.5 to 50 wt. parts. The polymerization is initiated with peroxidic initiators such as dibenzoyl peroxide, dilauroyl peroxide, di-tert-butyl peroxide, tert-butyl hydroperoxide, dicumyl peroxide or diacetyl peroxide, which are added in an amount of 0.1 to 5 wt. % based on the amount of monomers. The decomposition of these initiators is controlled at low polymerization temperatures by the action of ferrocene and / or monoacetylferocene, which is used in an amount of 0.1 to 10% by weight. % based on the amount of peroxide initiator used. The polymerizations are carried out under an inert atmosphere at a temperature of 25 to 75 ° C |
