abstract A process for the production of 1-substituted-5(4H)-tetrazolinones represented by the general formula: <CHEM> wherein R<1> represents optionally substituted C1-12 alkyl, optionally substituted C3-8 cycloalkyl, optionally substituted C3-8 alkenyl, optionally substituted C3-8 alkynyl, or a group represented by the general formula <CHEM> wherein Ar represents optionally substituted phenyl, optionally substituted naphthyl or an optionally substituted five- to seven-membered heterocyclic ring, R<3> represents hydrogen or C1-4 alkyl, and n is 0, 1, 2, 3 or 4, which comprises reacting the thioxo group of 1-substituted-5(4H)-tetrazolinethiones represented by the general formula (II) <CHEM> wherein R<1> has the same meaning as mentioned above, with ethylene oxides of the general formula (III) <CHEM> wherein R<2> represents hydrogen, methyl or ethyl, in the presence of a base, and in the presence of water or an alcohol or a solvent mixture thereof.
