abstract Process for the preparation of a poly (styrene-block-C2-C4-alkylene-stat-C2-C4-alkylene-block-styrene) block copolymer in which the benzene nuclei of styrene units are substituted by a sulfomethyl group which comprises chloromethylation of poly (styrene-block-C2) -C4-alkylene-stat-C2-C4-alkylene-block-styrene) to form a chloromethylated product which is reacted with thiourea to form an isothiouronium salt which is subsequently hydrolyzed with an alkali metal or alkaline earth metal hydroxide solution or C1-C4 an alkali metal alcoholate to form a mercaptomethylated product which is oxidized by an oxidizing agent to form a block copolymer.
