abstract The invention relates to a process for the preparation of tiotropium bromide of formula II, comprising the steps of: a) preparing a scopine ester of formula I by transesterification of methyl di (2-thienyl) glycollate of formula IV with scopine of formula III in the presence of a substoichiometric amount of a sterically hindered base selected from branched C3 alkali salts and (c) quaternizing the scopine ester of formula (I) with methyl bromide.
