titleOfInvention Method of producing (S) -3- (aminomethyl) -5-methylhexanoic acid (pregabalin)
abstract A method for the preparation of a 3-aminomethyl-5-methylhexanoic acid derivative of formula A, in particular an optically pure form of formula A ', wherein X is H.sup.2, alkali metal or alkaline earth metal, in which case the compound of formula B or its optically the pure form of formula B ', wherein Y is OH or NHR 1, NR 1, NR 2, R 2, OR 1, SR 2. n., where R.sub.1.n. and R.sub.2.n. is C.sub.1.n. az C.sub.20.n. aryl or alkyl; and R.sub.2.n. are part of a carbon cycle of 4 to 5, converted to a compound of formula A (A ') where Y is as defined above by a process involving the catalytic hydrogenation of a cyano group with hydrogen gas in an alkaline environment using a nickel catalyst.
