titleOfInvention A method for determining fiber fermentation and apparatus for carrying out the method
abstract The present invention relates to a method for determining fermentation of fibrous material wherein said fermentation method is characterized by conducting measuring of methane content in breath of an individual to whom fibrous material was applied beforehand orally, and evaluating the measured values. There is also disclosed an apparatus for making the method wherein the apparatus comprises a sampling tube (1) being connected to a methane measuring apparatus (2), whereby a measuring device (20) of a sample volume is integrated with the sampling tube, said measuring device (20) being usually formed by a rustless container (4) provided with a lifting piston (3) that is sealed in the container (4) by an acidified saturated solution of sodium chloride that simultaneously protects dissolution of exhaled air supplied from the sampling tube (1). The tube (1) is interrupted inside said lifting piston (3) interior above the level of the acidified saturated solution, whereby this sampling tube (1) leaves the interior via a shut-off valve (8) and extends further to the methane measuring apparatus (2). The rustless container (4) is provided with a piston stroke gauge (6), wherein volume of air exhaled into the lifting piston (3) interior can be determined according to the height of said lifting piston (3) stroke. The sampling tube (1) is provided with a mouthpiece (11) and with a valve (7) and a check valve (10) disposed in front of the rustless container (4) inlet. Said mouthpiece (11) is also connected through the mediation of a breathing tube (13) provided with a check valve (14) and a valve (19) to a supply bag (9) that is in turn connected via a pressure reducing valve (15) to an air cylinder (12).
