abstract | Methods for removing lower alkyl alcoholnof a polyester blend of a polyester polyol and a fatty acid anlower alkyl alcohol include (a) introducingncontacting the polyester composition with a stripping composition comprisingninert stripping gas, up to about 10,000 ppm alcohol basednlower alkyl and up to about 2,000 ppm oxygen, with at leastnthe lower alkyl alcohol portion is converted from polyesternto the stripping mixture, thereby increasing the concentration of alcoholnlower alkyl in the stripping mixture; and (b) separationnstripping blend from the polyester blend. The methods further includen(c) compressing the stripping mixture to increase the pressure; (d) coolingnstripping mixture to reduce its temperature, thereby condensingnat least a first lower alkyl alcohol moiety atna liquid (e) separating the condensed alcohol on the basenlower alkyl from the stripping mixture to reduce the amount of alcoholnbased on lower alkyl in the stripping mixture to a range of 1 ppmnand (f) directing the resulting stripping mixture tonan expansion turbine (64) in which temperature and pressure are reducednstripping mixture. Energy resulting from temperature reductionnthe stripping mixture and the pressure in the expansion turbine (64) are usedncompressing the stripping mixture separated from the polyester composition. |
