abstract Compounds are described which have the activity of reducing the levels of parathyroid hormone. In one embodiment, the compounds consist of an adjacent sequence of the subunits X1 - X2 - X3 - X4 - X5 - X6 - X7, wherein the subunit X1 comprises a thiol-containing moiety and the charge distribution of the subunits X2 - X7 provides the desired activity. Methods of using the compounds for the treatment of hyperparathyroidism, bone disease and / or disorders, hypercalcemic disorders are also described, and methods in particular for reducing plasma PTH and serum calcium are provided. The compounds may be used to treat subjects who have, for example: primary, secondary or tertiary hyperparathyroidism; malignant hypercalcaemia, metastatic bone disease or osteoporosis.
