abstract |
The invention provides a process for the preparation of a compound of formula (I): wherein R1 and R2 which may be the same or different are amino protecting groups, which process comprises protecting a compound of formula (II) by continuous method operation in solution phase. This offers advantages over batch operation. The process is usually carried out on reaction equipment configured for use in a continuous process method, for example comprising one or more static mixers or a plunger flow reactor. Preferably, the plunger reactor comprises a laminated tubular reactor fitted internally with intermixing elements which continuously separate and re-mix the reaction currents by enhancing mass and heat transfer, thereby achieving a uniform plunger flow profile. The invention also provides a process for the preparation of the antibacterial compound gemifloxacin or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt and / or hydrate thereof, comprising converting a compound of formula (I). The invention also provides a process for the preparation of a compound of formula (VIIIa). |
