abstract The present invention relates to a new 5- enolpiruvilshikimato-3-phosphate synthase (EPSPS) that has increased tolerance in relation to herbicides that are competitive inhibitors with respect to phosphoenolpyruvate (PEP). This EPSPS has at least one substitution of threonine for isoleucine and a chimeric gene encoding the EPSPS, which comprises a coding sequence, as well as regulatory elements in positions 5` and 3` that are heterologous and capable of functioning in plants.
