The polycondensates have general formula I, <IMAGE> where p is 2 to 1,000, r is 1 to 500, n is 0 to 11, R is CH3 and m is 0 to 3. They are produced by oxidative polycondensation of 2,6-xylenol with suitable phenol-cresol-polymethylphenol-formaldehyde resins catalysed by complexes of salts of copper with amines in a mixed solvent formed by aromatic hydrocarbons and aliphatic alcohols. The polycondensates have better processing characteristics than polyphenylene oxide alone, above all hardness, thermal constancy and stability. |
