abstract The invention relates to novel prostanoid compounds and compositions for increasing the birth rate in female farm animals. The synthetic prostanoids according to the invention are characterized by the general formula I, <CHEM> wherein are: <CHEM> These compounds have unexpectedly been found to produce a significant increase in the plasma progesterone level following a single intramuscular injection due to a kind of luteotropic action which is opposite to the known luteolytic action of some structurally related prostaglandins described in the literature. The compounds and compositions are particularly suited for the treatment of cows and sows.
