abstract | 1480112 Diene rubber latex production; and its coagulation BAYER AG 18 Sept 1974 [22 Sept 1973] 40640/74 Heading C3P A monomer mixture comprising (by weight) 85-50 parts butadiene and/or isoprene, 10-40 parts (meth)acrylonitrile and 0À1-10 parts α,#- unsaturated acid is polymerized in aqueous emulsion at 10-80‹ C. at pH below 7 in the presence of initiator, molecular weight modifier and 0À5-6% of alkyl aryl sulphonate to give a latex containing rubber having a Defo value less than 2000 and particle diameter not more than 200 nm.; the pH is adjusted with alkali metal hydroxide to above 8 and the rubber then precipitated with coagulant. Additionally up to 40 parts styrene and up to 10 parts (meth)- acrylamide or the N-methylol, ether, ester or urethane derivative thereof may be present as may up to 5% of a further surface active substance, e.g. alkali metal sulphonate or sulphate or a non-ionic emulsifier. In Example 1, the sodium salt of naphthalene-#-sulphonic acid/ formaldehyde condensation product and FeSO 4 were also present together with t-dodecyl mercaptan and formaldehyde sulphoxylate: tbutylhydroperoxide was used as initiator. In Example 2, FeCl 2 was present with n-dodecylmercaptan: the initiator was p-menthane hydroperoxide used with formaldehyde sulphoxylate. The polymerization may be stopped before pH adjustment by addition of e.g. sodium bisulphite, sodium dithionite, Rongalite (Registered Trade Mark), hydroxylamine, dialkylhydroxylamines, hydrazine or sodium dimethyl dithiocarbamate. Subsequent cross-linking may be facilitated by the presence in the latex of, e.g. zinc oxide together, if desired with a vulcanizing agent (several disclosed). Stabilizers, e.g. casein, cellulose derivatives, styrene/maleic acid ester copolymers or polyacrylic acid may also be present. As coagulants, Ca(NO 3 ) 2 or CaCl 2 may be used with water or organic solvents. The product may be coagulated in the form of a film on the surface of a coagulant-coated mould or as a continuously extruded article. |
