titleOfInvention | Process for preparing carbon black |
abstract | 1502633 Carbon black CABOT CORP 14 Feb 1975 [25 Feb 1974] 6265/75 Heading C1A Carbon black is made by continuously burning a fluid fuel and an oxidant gas in an enclosed combustion zone 11, forming the resulting combustion gases to a stream of annular cross-section flowing at a linear velocity of at least Mach 0À35, injecting individual, initially coherent streams of a liquid carbon-forming feedstock substantially transversely into said annular combustion gas stream from a plurality of points about the exterior periphery 21 and at least one interior location 29, each stream penetrating to a depth of at least 15% of the cross-sectional dimension of the stream, preferably conducting the resultant reaction mixture to another enclosed zone 31 wherein it is maintained for sufficient time to foster carbon black formation, quenching 41 the resulting carbon black-containing mixture and separating 45 and collecting carbon black as a product. The combustion gases discharged from the downstream end of the combustion chamber 11 are preferably passed at a linear velocity of Mach 0À4-0À8 through the feedstock injection zone 13, the zone being defined by the inner wall of conduit 17 and the terminal portion 20 of feedstock injection probe 19. Each injected feedstock stream preferably penetrates the annular combustion gas stream to a depth of 15-50% of the cross-sectional dimension. The annular cross-section may be essentially circular or rectangular or the combustion gas stream may be formed into a plurality of streams each having an annular cross-sectional geometry and wherein the feedstock injection is achieved from the interior peripheries of each of said annuli. An aqueous solution of KC1 may be injected into the combustion chamber 11. A variety of suitable fuels, oxidants and feedstocks are listed. |
