A synthetic polymer containing one or more amphiphilic hydrocarbon media; said synthetic polymer has the following structure: <EMI FILE = "00003476_1" ID = "1" MFI = JPEG> where: a, b ANDgt; 0; c, d = 0 so that c + dANDgt; 0; W = 1; Q1 = a monomer unit or a block or graft copolymer containing a pendant group capable of forming hydrogen bonds or covalent with cellulose; Q2 = a block or graft copolymer containing the amphiphilic medium; Q3 = a monomer unit or a block or graft copolymer containing a filler functionality; and Q4 = a monomer unit or a block or graft copolymer containing a hydrophilic medium, desirable to make the material fit in a form suitable for papermaking. 2 The polymer of claim 15, wherein R0 consists of both -CONH2 as of -CONHCHOHCHO.4 A method of making a sheet of paper comprising the steps of: (a) forming an aqueous suspension of fibers to make paper; (b) depositing the aqueous suspension of the fibers in a forming material to form a strip; and (c) draining and drying the strip to form a sheet of paper, wherein a synthetic polymer is added to the aqueous fiber suspension and / or the strip; said polymer has the following structure: <EMI FILE = "00003476_2" ID = "2" IMF = JPEG> where: a, b ANDgt; 0; c, d = 0; W = 1; Q1 = a monomer unit or a block or graft copolymer containing a pendant group capable of forming hydrogen or covalent bonds with cellulose; Q2 = a block or graft copolymer containing the amphiphilic hydrocarbon medium; Q3 = a monomer unit or a block or graft copolymer containing a filler functionality; and Q4 = a monomer unit or a block or graft copolymer containing a hydrophilic medium, desirable to make the material fit in a form suitable for papermaking. |
