Described herein is an intraoperative ultrasound imaging system and method that enables the use of ultrasound imaging to safely pass a surgical access instrument (eg, guidewire, dilator, cannula, etc.) through tissue (eg, , muscle, fat, brain, liver, lung, etc.) are placed without damaging nearby neurovascular structures. The intraoperative ultrasound system includes an ultrasound probe assembly configured to transmit and receive ultrasound waves and a computer system including a processor and a display unit. Once the probe is in place, ultrasound imaging is performed in which a computer receives RF data from the probe and causes B-ultrasound images of visible anatomy (eg, muscles, bones, etc.) to be displayed on a display unit. |
