The present invention relates to a method for the fermentative production of thaxtomin A, thaxtomin B or thaxtomin D by heterologously expressing a thaxtomin biosynthetic gene cluster. In a preferred embodiment, synthetic biology strategies are further applied to redesign the thaxtomin biosynthetic pathway using gene cluster editing technology, and constitutive strong promoter elements are inserted into the txtAB, txtED and/or txtC operons in the gene cluster upstream of the transcription start site, which in turn increases thaxtomin production. |
