Devices and methods for the treatment of patients with heart failure by ablating nerves in the thoracic splanchnic sympathetic nervous system to increase venous blood volume and reduce pulmonary arterial pressure. A method includes inserting a catheter into a vein near the nerve, delivering stimulation energy and observing hemodynamic response, delivering ablation energy and observing hemodynamic response, generating stimulation energy and observing hemodynamic response after ablation chemical response, and monitoring whether the lung tissue is within the ablation zone. Another method includes inserting a catheter into a vein near the nerve, detecting whether the lung tissue is at a safe distance from the ablation area, and delivering ablation energy to ablate the target nerve when the lung tissue is at a safe distance from the ablation area. |
