A system, method, and apparatus includes a controller structured to predict changes in vehicle speed in advance of impending terrain, and disable a coasting event if the speed exceeds a limit. In one form, vehicle speed is predicted using a physics-based model of the vehicle within a look-ahead window in front of the vehicle. This look-ahead window can be based on distance or time. In another aspect, vehicle speed is monitored during a coasting event and compared to a threshold to determine whether to maintain coasting or re-engage the engine to the driveline. The threshold is a function of road grade and allows for a greater deviation from the set speed at low grades than at high grades. The function may be based on road grade and vehicle weight. |
