A method of assessing the risk of developing cardiovascular disease (CVD) or inflammatory disease in a patient comprising (i) incubating a sample of bodily fluid with a donor particle wherein the lipid and a first amount of detectably labeled non-exchangeable lipid are used A probe (NELP) coats the donor particle; (ii) separates detectably labeled NELP-associated HDL into a first fraction and the donor particle into a second fraction; (iii) measures the a second amount of detectably labeled NELP in the first portion; (iv) determining a detectably labeled NELP efflux value for the patient; and (v) comparing the patient's detectably labeled NELP efflux value to a reference standard for comparison. Also provided are related methods of reducing the risk of developing CVD or inflammatory disease in a patient and methods of measuring the amount of functional HDL in a body fluid sample. |
