abstract The invention relates to a microbial strain and a method for preparing low molecular weight substances and proteins by antibiotic fermentation. Microbial strains for the production of low molecular weight substances or proteins contain in their genome mutations in genes which cause auxotrophy in the strain. It further contains a production plasmid encoding an enzyme for the production of low molecular weight substances or a recombinant protein and a functional copy of a gene whose chromosomal inactivation causes an auxotrophy, wherein the auxotrophy is an uncompensable auxotrophy.
