abstract The invention discloses a method for obtaining a carboxylic acid product from a lactose-containing raw material. The method comprises: under anaerobic conditions with a temperature of about 45° C. to about 55° C. and a pH value of about 4 to about 6, the lactose-containing raw material is mixed with the first. A mixture of microorganisms is contacted in the first bioreactor for a period of time to form lactic acid; lactic acid and a second mixture of microorganisms are brought into contact under anaerobic conditions at a temperature of about 25°C to about 35°C and a pH of about 4 to about 6 contacting in the second bioreactor for a period of time, thereby converting lactic acid to one or more C3 - C12 carboxylic acid products; and, separating the one or more C3 - C12 carboxylic acid products. The pH of the lactose-containing feedstock is greater than 4.5.
