abstract The present invention provides modes of operation for a User Equipment (UE) communicating in an unlicensed carrier, e.g., NR-unlicensed. The UE is configured to operate in one or more operating modes, including FBE and LBE. The UE may be configured to operate with FBE, wherein the apparatus has a fixed frame period according to CCA; or operate with LBE, where the apparatus determines whether the channel is idle and transmits only when the channel is idle. The UE is configured to operate in an operational mode to be used for communicating with a communication network (e.g., a cellular network), wherein the UE may transmit and/or receive one or more Listen Before Talk (LBT) messages with the communication network through a Radio Access Network (RAN) based on the operational mode.
