abstract |
A method of desalting an aqueous composition comprising forming a heteroazeotrope by combining an aqueous composition with an entrainer, the aqueous composition comprising at least one salt, and subjecting the heteroazeotrope to an aqueous composition below an operating distillation pressure Distillation at a distillation temperature above the boiling temperature of the substance results in the separation of the heteroazeotrope into distillation bottoms liquid and heterogeneous condensate. The method includes recovering a multiphase condensate having an entrainer-rich phase and an aqueous phase, the aqueous phase comprising desalinated water, and removing a portion of the aqueous phase from the multiphase condensate to recover the desalinated water. A system for implementing the method of desalinating a water stream is also disclosed. |
