An imaging system and method for leak detection uses schlieren imaging to locate and characterize a pressurized gas flow having a different refractive index than ambient air. In particular, the schlieren imaging system includes collimated light, a knife-edge spatial filter, and a 4F telescopic imaging system is used to create images of the device under test (DUT). The DUT is pressurized and monitored for leaks. When a leak is present and located in the monitored plane of the DUT, the contrast change indicates the presence, location and nature of the leak. For example, a waterproof/leakproof mobile device may be evaluated for leaks between layers of modules, such as leaks in the chassis of a waterproof electronics housing. This detection can allow for the identification and characterization of leak points via visual identification. |
