A method or apparatus for amplifying target nucleic acid sequences in a reaction mixture in a polymerase chain reaction. The method includes contacting the reaction mixture with particles that can absorb electromagnetic wave frequencies, the particles can be formed from a material, the material can be a transition metal, or a transition metal oxide or a transition metal hydroxide, or a nitride, phosphide or arsenide of a Group III metal doped with a transition metal or transition metal oxide, or a dioxide with a doped transition metal, transition metal oxide or transition metal hydroxide Silicon; irradiating electromagnetic waves with a frequency of about 200 kHz to 500 THz to particles that can absorb electromagnetic waves to amplify target nucleic acid sequences. The Group III metal may be aluminum (Al), gallium (Ga), or indium (In), and the transition metal may be manganese (Mn), iron (Fe), cobalt (Co), or copper (Cu). |
