abstract | The invention discloses the synthesis of isoprene-butadiene copolymer rubber. It has been unexpectedly discovered that certain neodymium catalyst systems can be used in the copolymerization of isoprene and 1,3-butadiene to produce non-tapered random isoprene-butadiene copolymer rubbers. These atactic isoprene-butadiene copolymer rubbers have properties that are beneficial for use in rubber formulations for the manufacture of a wide variety of rubber products such as tires, hoses, conveyor belts, power transmission belts and soles. These atactic isoprene-butadiene rubbers were synthesized by mixing (a) isoprene monomer or substituted isoprene monomer and (b) 1,3-butadiene monomer in a neodymium catalyst Copolymerization in the presence of a system wherein the neodymium catalyst system is prepared by (1) reacting a neodymium carboxylate with an organoaluminum compound in the presence of a conjugated diene monomer to produce a neodymium-aluminum catalyst component, and (2) subsequent The neodymium-aluminum catalyst component is reacted with an alkylaluminum chloride to produce a neodymium catalyst system. |
